That is 16 million a year!?? So what causes thunderstorms?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Thunderstorms need three things to develop:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Moisture: To form clouds and rain<\/li>\n<li>Unstable air: Warm air that can rise rapidly<\/li>\n<li>Lift: Caused by cold or warm fronts, sea breezes, mountains, or the sun&#8217;s heat<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_2427\" style=\"width: 467px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ialert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-09-at-5.24.25-PM.png\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2427\" class=\"wp-image-2427\" src=\"http:\/\/ialert.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-09-at-5.24.25-PM.png\" alt=\"The Life Cycle of a Thunderstorm\" width=\"457\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to Enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The life cycle of a thunderstorm is in three stages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Developing Stage:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Towering cumulus cloud indicates rising air<\/li>\n<li>Usually little if any rain<\/li>\n<li>Lasts about 10 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Occasional lightning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Mature Stage:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Most likely time for hail, heavy rain, frequent lightning, strong winds, and tornadoes<\/li>\n<li>Storm occasionally has a black or dark green appearance<\/li>\n<li>Lasts an average of 10 to 20 minutes but some storms may last longer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Dissipating Stage:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Downdrafts, downward flowing air, dominate the storm<\/li>\n<li>Rainfall decreases in intensity<\/li>\n<li>Can still produce a burst of strong winds<\/li>\n<li>Lightning remains a danger<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Looking to understand <em><a title=\"Criteria for a severe thunderstorm warning\" href=\"http:\/\/ialert.com\/blog\/weather-glossary\/criteria-for-a-severe-thunderstorm-warning\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">severe thunderstorms<\/a><\/em>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that 1,800 thunderstorms occur at any moment around the world??
