{"id":2646,"date":"2014-11-05T12:36:05","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T12:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ialert.com\/blog\/?p=2646"},"modified":"2025-08-12T23:02:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T23:02:33","slug":"osha-safe-winter-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ialert.com\/blog\/weather-articles\/osha-safe-winter-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Three P&#8217;s of Safe Winter Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winter driving can be hazardous and scary, especially in northern regions that get a lot of snow and ice.\u00a0 Additional preparations can help make a trip safer, or help motorists deal with an emergency.\u00a0 This sheet provides safety information to help prevent motor vehicle injuries due to winter storms.<\/p>\n<p>The three P&#8217;s of Safe Winter Driving: <strong>PREPARE<\/strong> for the trip; <strong>PROTECT<\/strong> yourself; and <strong>PREVENT<\/strong> crashes on the road.<\/p>\n<h3>PREPARE<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Maintain Your Car:<\/strong> Check battery, tire tread, and windshield wipers, keep your windows clear, put no-freeze fluid in the washer reservoir, and check your antifreeze.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have On Hand:<\/strong> flashlight, jumper cables, abrasive material (sand, kitty litter, even floor mats), shovel, snow brush and ice scraper, warning devices (like flares) and blankets.\u00a0 <em>For long trips<\/em>, add food and water, medication and cell phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stopped or Stalled?<\/strong> Stay in your car, don&#8217;t overexert, put bright markers on antenna or windows and shine dome light, and, if you run your car, clear exhaust pipe and run it just enough to stay warm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan Your Route:<\/strong>\u00a0 Allow plenty of time (<a title=\"Checking for winter weather before you travel\" href=\"http:\/\/iAlert.com\">check the weather <\/a>and leave early if necessary), be familiar with the maps\/directions, and let others know your route and arrival time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practice Cold Weather Driving!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During daylight, rehearse maneuvers slowly on ice or snow in an empty lot.<\/li>\n<li>Steer into a skid.<\/li>\n<li>Know what your brakes will do: <em>stop on antilock brakes, pump on non-antilock brakes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Stopping distances are longer on water-covered ice and ice.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t idle for a long time with windows up or in an enclosed space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PROTECT<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Buckle up and use child safety seats properly.<\/li>\n<li>Never place a rear-facing infant seat in front of an air bag.<\/li>\n<li>Children 12 and under are much safer in the back seat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PREVENT<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Drugs and alcohol never mix with driving<\/li>\n<li>Slow down and increase distance between cars.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your eyes open for pedestrians walking in the road.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid fatigue &#8211;
