Any one working in the cold may be at risk, eg., workers in freezers, outdoor agriculture and construction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Common Types of Cold Stress<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Hypothermia<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Normal body temperature (98.6F) drops to 95F or less<\/li>\n<li>Mild Symptoms: alert by shivering; confusion; slurred speech; heart rate\/breathing slow; loss of consciousness; death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Frostbite<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Body tissues freeze, e.g., hands and feet.\u00a0 Can occur at temperatures above freezing, due to wind chill.\u00a0 May result in amputation<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms: numbness, reddened skin develops gray\/white patches, feels firm\/hard, and may blister<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Trench Foot (also known as Immersion Foot)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Non-freezing injury to the foot, caused by lengthy exposure to wet and cold environment.\u00a0 Can occur at air temperature as high as 60F, if feed are constantly wet.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms: redness, swelling, numbness, and blisters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dressing improperly, wet clothing\/skin, and exhaustion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For Prevention, Your Employer Should<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Train you on cold stress hazards and preventions<\/li>\n<li>Provide engineering controls, e.g. radiant heaters.<\/li>\n<li>Gradually introduce workers to the cold: monitor workers; schedule in warm areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to Protect Yourself and Others<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know the symptoms; monitor yourself and co-workers<\/li>\n<li>Drink warm, sweetened fluids (no alcohol)<\/li>\n<li>Dress properly:\n<ul>\n<li>Layers of loose-fitting, insulating clothes<\/li>\n<li>Insulated jacket, gloves, and a hat (waterproof, if necessary)<\/li>\n<li>Insulated and waterproof boots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What to Do When of Worker Suffers from Cold Stress<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>For Hypothermia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call 911 immediately in an emergency<\/li>\n<li>To Prevent further heat loss:\n<ul>\n<li>Move the worker to a warm place<\/li>\n<li>Change to dry clothes<\/li>\n<li>Cover the body (including the head and neck) with blankets, and with something to block the cold (e.g., tarp, garbage bag). Do not cover the face.<\/li>\n<li>If medical help is more than 30 minutes away:\n<ul>\n<li>Give warm, sweetened drinks if alerts (no alcohol)<\/li>\n<li>Apply heat packs to the armpits, sides of chest, neck, and groin.\u00a0 Call 911 for additional rewarming instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For Frostbite:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow the recommendations &#8220;For Hypothermia&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Do not rub the frostbitten area<\/li>\n<li>Avoid walking on frostbitten feet<\/li>\n<li>Do not apply snow\/water. Do not break blisters.<\/li>\n<li>Loosely cover and protect the area from contact<\/li>\n<li>Do not try to rewarm the area unless directed by medical personnel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For Trench (Immersion) Foot:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove we shoes\/socks; air dry (in warm area); keep affected feet elevated and avoid walking.
