They can bring much needed rainfall, yet they also produce dangerous hazards such as lightning, hail, flash flooding, and tornadoes. Because thunder is the sound produced by lightning, every thunderstorm has lightning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Worldwide activity:<\/strong> About 16 million thunderstorms occur each year with roughly 2,000 ongoing at any moment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>United States activity:<\/strong> Around 100,000 thunderstorms occur annually. About 10 percent reach severe levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ingredients\">Ingredients for Thunderstorm Formation<\/h2>\n<p>Three basic ingredients are required for a thunderstorm to form:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Moisture<\/strong> to support cloud and precipitation formation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unstable rising air<\/strong> that continues upward when lifted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A lifting mechanism<\/strong> such as fronts, outflow boundaries, mountains, or sea breezes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sunlight warms the surface and the air above it. When warm, moisture laden air is lifted, it rises and cools. Water vapor condenses into clouds that can grow into tall cumulonimbus towers. In the freezing upper portions of the storm, ice particles collide and transfer electric charges that eventually discharge as lightning.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"life-cycle\">Life Cycle of a Thunderstorm<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Stage 1: Developing stage<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Towering cumulus clouds form due to strong updrafts.<\/li>\n<li>Lightning may occur, but little to no rain reaches the ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stage 2: Mature stage<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Updrafts and downdrafts coexist.<\/li>\n<li>Heavy rain, hail, frequent lightning, strong winds, and possible tornadoes.<\/li>\n<li>This is typically the most intense phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stage 3: Dissipating stage<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Downdrafts dominate and cut off warm moist inflow.<\/li>\n<li>Rainfall tapers, but lightning can remain hazardous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- ADD IMAGE: INLINE 2 (1024x576) \u2014 life-cycle visual --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"types\">Thunderstorm Types<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Single cell thunderstorms<\/h3>\n<p>Short lived storms that often form on warm afternoons. Sometimes called popcorn convection. They typically last less than an hour and can produce brief heavy rain and lightning.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Multi cell thunderstorms<\/h3>\n<p>Groups of storm cells that develop along a gust front. Systems can last for hours and may produce hail, strong winds, brief tornadoes, and flooding.<\/p>\n<p><Br><\/p>\n<h3>Squall lines<\/h3>\n<p>Lines of thunderstorms capable of widespread straight line wind and heavy rain.
