The SPC notes that a sustained surface-based supercell in this<br \/>\n  environment would conditionally be capable of producing a strong tornado.<\/p>\n<h2>Meteorologist&#8217;s take on the Nebraska Iowa severe storms<\/h2>\n<p>The setup is a classic early-autumn Plains pattern. A seasonably strong mid-level shortwave trough, with a 50 to 70-plus knot mid-level jet,<br \/>\n  advances quickly east-northeastward across the northern Plains and south-central Canada today, while ridging remains prominent over the Southeast<br \/>\n  and Ohio Valley. Between them, a belt of roughly 30 to 50 knot mid-level west-southwesterly flow persists from the central Plains into the lower and<br \/>\n  mid Missouri Valley, providing deep-layer shear that favors supercells initially.<\/p>\n<p>At the surface, the primary low moves into southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba by this evening, and a secondary low should form near the<br \/>\n  Nebraska\/South Dakota border by late afternoon. Greater low-level moisture across Kansas will attempt to lift northward along a warm front, ahead of<br \/>\n  a cold front sweeping southeastward across the northern and central Plains. That front is the focus for late-day storm development. Supercells come<br \/>\n  first, then a fairly quick transition to clusters and line segments.<\/p>\n<p>Two pieces of uncertainty temper the Nebraska Iowa severe storms forecast. First, guidance disagrees on how far north rich low-level moisture<br \/>\n  gets by late afternoon, which controls how unstable the warm sector becomes. Second, several RAP forecast soundings show lingering low-level<br \/>\n  inhibition (a stable layer that keeps storms from rooting at the surface), so it is unclear whether storms can fully tap the strong low-level shear.<br \/>\n  A 40 to 50 knot low-level jet is building ample effective storm-relative helicity, the low-level spin that rotating storms can draw on.<\/p>\n<p>Modest lapse rates aloft and the quick mode transition should limit how long and how widely large hail is a threat. The SPC says confidence there is<br \/>\n  too low for higher wind probabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Across the northern Plains, a band of elevated thunderstorms was moving through the Dakotas this morning. Cool, stable air near the ground limits<br \/>\n  confidence in a severe wind threat there, though small hail and gusty winds may occur.<\/p>\n<p>Scattered thunderstorms are expected later today from western Colorado and southeast Utah into parts of Arizona and New Mexico, with isolated<br \/>\n  gusty winds and small to perhaps near-severe hail possible. Confidence in an organized severe risk there was too low for 5% probabilities. Over<br \/>\n  eastern and coastal North Carolina, a southward-moving cold front meeting sea breeze boundaries could produce isolated thunderstorms with locally<br \/>\n  gusty winds and small hail.<\/p>\n<p>St. Joseph and Columbia, Missouri; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota; and Burlington, Iowa, are in the general<br \/>\n  thunderstorm area only, outside any severe risk area.<\/p>\n<h2>How to stay safe in Nebraska Iowa severe storms<\/h2>\n<p>Because the Nebraska Iowa severe storms threat peaks late in the day and into the evening, set up warnings now rather than watching the sky<br \/>\n  later.
