Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs sit in the core of the threat, with a 15% large hail probability, a 15% damaging wind probability, and a 5% tornado probability. The outlook was issued at 12:46 UTC (8:46 am EDT / 7:46 am CDT).

Where the Nebraska Iowa severe storms threat is highest

The Slight Risk for Nebraska Iowa severe storms includes Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska plus Council Bluffs, Sioux City, and Des Moines in Iowa. Its outline matches the SPC’s 15% damaging wind area exactly, and the 15% hail and 5% tornado areas sit inside it. Per the SPC, the 15% wind area covers 35,148 square miles and about 2.5 million people.

Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs carry the day’s highest probabilities and also fall inside a hatched conditional intensity area for damaging wind, which marks where storms that do form could reach the higher end of that hazard.

Des Moines and Sioux City carry a 2% tornado probability and a 5% large hail probability rather than the top values. Both cities do carry the full 15% damaging wind probability, so the wind threat there matches the core corridor. All five Slight Risk cities lie within a hatched conditional intensity area for tornadoes, which covers about 2.5 million people.

A surrounding Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) stretches from eastern Iowa southwest across central Nebraska and western Kansas to the Oklahoma Panhandle. It takes in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Ottumwa, and Mason City in Iowa, Norfolk and Grand Island in Nebraska, and Hays and Goodland in Kansas. Every city in a severe risk area carries at least a 5% damaging wind probability, and Hays and Grand Island are included in the hatched conditional intensity area for wind.

Large hail probabilities are drawn much more narrowly. Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Ottumwa, Mason City, Goodland, and Hays have no hail probability at all, while Norfolk and Grand Island carry 5%. Of the cities named here, only the five in the Slight Risk carry a tornado probability.

Timing and hazards for the Nebraska Iowa severe storms

Storms were already underway this morning across the central Plains and mid Missouri Valley, fed by warm, moist air on a strong south-southwesterly low-level jet. The SPC expects that activity to stay elevated and below severe levels as it tracks quickly east-northeastward through late morning before weakening. In its wake, the atmosphere is forecast to destabilize rapidly across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa as rich low-level moisture streams northward.

A narrow corridor of moderate to strong instability, with MLCAPE (a measure of the energy available to rising storm updrafts) of 2,000 to more than 3,000 J/kg, appears plausible across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa between 21Z and 00Z (5:00 pm to 8:00 pm EDT / 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm CDT). That assumes surface temperatures warm into at least the low to mid 80s.

Strong thunderstorms should develop along or just ahead of the cold front by late afternoon and early evening across eastern Nebraska, with wind shear favorable for supercells at first. Nearly all guidance continues to show a favorable environment for tornadoes across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa as supercells and clusters spread quickly eastward this evening. The SPC notes that a sustained surface-based supercell in this environment would conditionally be capable of producing a strong tornado.

Meteorologist’s take on the Nebraska Iowa severe storms

The setup is a classic early-autumn Plains pattern. A seasonably strong mid-level shortwave trough, with a 50 to 70-plus knot mid-level jet, advances quickly east-northeastward across the northern Plains and south-central Canada today, while ridging remains prominent over the Southeast and Ohio Valley. Between them, a belt of roughly 30 to 50 knot mid-level west-southwesterly flow persists from the central Plains into the lower and mid Missouri Valley, providing deep-layer shear that favors supercells initially.

At the surface, the primary low moves into southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba by this evening, and a secondary low should form near the Nebraska/South Dakota border by late afternoon. Greater low-level moisture across Kansas will attempt to lift northward along a warm front, ahead of a cold front sweeping southeastward across the northern and central Plains. That front is the focus for late-day storm development. Supercells come first, then a fairly quick transition to clusters and line segments.

Two pieces of uncertainty temper the Nebraska Iowa severe storms forecast. First, guidance disagrees on how far north rich low-level moisture gets by late afternoon, which controls how unstable the warm sector becomes. Second, several RAP forecast soundings show lingering low-level inhibition (a stable layer that keeps storms from rooting at the surface), so it is unclear whether storms can fully tap the strong low-level shear. A 40 to 50 knot low-level jet is building ample effective storm-relative helicity, the low-level spin that rotating storms can draw on.

Modest lapse rates aloft and the quick mode transition should limit how long and how widely large hail is a threat. Severe and damaging winds become an increasing concern as clusters spread east-northeastward, and weak instability farther east across eastern Iowa should limit the risk tonight.

Other areas watching storms Monday

Beyond the Slight Risk for Nebraska Iowa severe storms, the Marginal Risk extends into eastern Colorado and western and northern Kansas, where isolated severe gusts are possible this afternoon with high-based, loosely organized storms along a surface trough. The SPC says confidence there is too low for higher wind probabilities.

Across the northern Plains, a band of elevated thunderstorms was moving through the Dakotas this morning. Cool, stable air near the ground limits confidence in a severe wind threat there, though small hail and gusty winds may occur.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected later today from western Colorado and southeast Utah into parts of Arizona and New Mexico, with isolated gusty winds and small to perhaps near-severe hail possible. Confidence in an organized severe risk there was too low for 5% probabilities. Over eastern and coastal North Carolina, a southward-moving cold front meeting sea breeze boundaries could produce isolated thunderstorms with locally gusty winds and small hail.

St. Joseph and Columbia, Missouri; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Minneapolis and Rochester, Minnesota; and Burlington, Iowa, are in the general thunderstorm area only, outside any severe risk area.

How to stay safe in Nebraska Iowa severe storms

Because the Nebraska Iowa severe storms threat peaks late in the day and into the evening, set up warnings now rather than watching the sky later.
